Enough of this “Occupy Wall St doesn’t have demands” crap! I guess it is OWS’s own fault to a degree, they still have their “one demand” slogan certain places- but there is ABSOLUTELY NO NEED FOR ONE DEMAND. The idea of “one demand” is part of the right wing patriarchal system we are fighting against. The Tea Partiers have one demand and it’s fucking ludicrous. They are not who we need to be modeling ourselves after.
I heard someone describe it well. Few of us are mechanics but most of us drive. If the car won’t start, you’ll take it back to the mechanic. You won’t say “change the carburetor” hoping that will fix the problem. The mechanic isn’t going to tell you you’re being a hypocrite and you can’t claim it doesn’t work if you don’t know what’s wrong with it, fixing it is his job not yours. That said, there are a lot of very intelligent people there who have a lot of ideas about what could be done to fix the situation. There are specific marches for specific goals, like a mass exodus of Bank of America accounts last weeks. There are a lot specifics within the Occupy umbrella. There are also people there who are busy working three minimum wage jobs and just want to stop by and share their dissatisfaction. And sure there are people there who are pretty crazy too, but whatever.
Dave Haack, who previous to the movement tried to get a vote going for a demand has since began focusing on something better: goals. There are a lot of groups within the Occupy Wall St movement just in Zuccotti Park alone, not to mention the other cities, states, and countries. There’s the feminists, the unions, the Native Americans, the libertarians, the anarchists, the working class, the college students… each could focus on their own projects while coming together to work on bigger ones as a whole. The Occupy Wall St movement represents a true democracy, and rather than placing demands we are leading by example.
